They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge, known as the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front--Vimy Ridge--was in their hands--at a cost of only 10,000 casualties. Vimy has become an enduring Canadian myth marking, in most minds, a turning point in Canada's relations with the world. These were Canada’s formative years, when she resembled an adolescent, grappling with the problems of puberty, often at odds with her parents, craving to be treated as an adult, hungry for the acclaim of her peers, and wary of the dominating presence of a more sophisticated neighbour.” – From the Introduction

Canada's twentieth century can be divided roughly into two halves. All the wars and all the unnecessary battles in which Canadian youth was squandered belong to the first — from the autumn of 1899 to the summer of 1953. From the mid-1950s on, Canada has concerned itself not with war but with peace.

The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the bookends on the shelf of history. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadian blood. Nowadays, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process.

In this monumental work, Pierre Berton brings Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals at the front, and the politicians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, Marching as to War describes how the experience of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationship with the United States.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0857/9435/7545/files/marching-as-to-war-canadas-turbulent-years-701008.webp?v=1754374381
canada-1892-portrait-of-a-promised-land
Canada-1892: Portrait of a promised land

In words and pictures this book provides an unforgettable journey across the Canada of a century ago. This was the last wilderness region of substantial size to be opened for settlement in southern Ontario. The relatively late arrival of settlers to the peninsula and its commercial development is paralleled in the limited attention historians have given to the region. Consequently, this book is the first complete history to be published about the Bruce Peninsula.
The forest products industry and settlers both arrived on the peninsula in the late 1850s. This relationship was marred by conflict as they both competed to establish their place in the region. In the end, neither won, the limited quality of arable land sent many settlers westward in search of a better future and ultimately the forest products industry ceased to be more than a cottage industry supplying firewood to campers and local residents.
Shipwrecks, Parks, & Sawmills: Their Impact on the Bruce Peninsula, 1850-2019 explores how and why tourism on the peninsula experienced a hesitant beginning, but in the end became a thriving economic driver for the region. Its remote location, limited travel access, and lack of capital necessary to establish a flourishing industry were all factors in this slow process. Finally, governmental assistance, a renewed interest in conservation, a demand for more recreation spaces, and the region’s unique natural and human history all came together to create a viable tourism industry that today sustains the Bruce Peninsula.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0857/9435/7545/files/shipwrecks-parks-sawmills-their-impact-on-the-bruce-peninsula-1850-2019-signed-352641.png?v=1754413149
journey-the-bruce-peninsula-past-present
Journey The Bruce Peninsula: Past & Present

Journey The Bruce Peninsula Past & Present provides the reader with three travel routes on the Bruce Peninsula to arrive at Tobermory. Along each route there are stories, mostly of historical significance while others are simply meant to be entertaining, pertaining to various places along the route. There are great places to spend a day swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, or just sitting in a quiet place enjoying a book or simply the natural surroundings. You will be introduced to hidden natural gems like one our favourites, Issac Lake, a great place to fish, paddle, or simply ponder about the natural beauty of the area. You will be guided to, and along, the Rankin Portage. Today you can drive the route that was once a canoe portage passageway for Indigenous and early European travellers, including French explorers and others including Paul Kane an painter of pioneer Canadiana, all of whom used the portage as quicker and safer route rather than the treacherous waters around the tip of the peninsula near Tobermory where countless shipwrecks rest on the bottom of the Georgian Bay/ Lake Huron gap. Another favourite visiting site is Ghost Lake, You will have to read the book to find more about the eerie location. This book is the result of several years of living and researching the history of the Bruce Peninsula. My earliest exposure to the peninsula was provided by my grandmother whose family were the first non-Indigenous residents of the peninsula. Later, after graduating from University I co-author ed a historical report about the marine history of the Bruce Peninsula for Parks Canada. I have written several hundred newspaper articles about the region. And, more recently, I completed a Masters thesis about the Impact of the Forest Products and Tourism Industries on the Bruce Peninsula. I know that you will enjoy not only travelling one, or all, of the routes in the book, but also reading about them as you tour the land of awesome sunrises and romantic sunsets. Enjoy Journey The Bruce Peninsula Past & Present.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0857/9435/7545/files/journey-the-bruce-peninsula-past-present-526462.png?v=1754413185
history-of-friedrich-ii-of-prussia-called-frederick-the-great-vol-iii
History of Friedrich II of Prussia Called Frederick The Great Vol III

Thomas Carlyle's "History of Friedrich II of Prussia, Called Frederick the Great" is a multi-volume work that chronicles the life and reign of the Prussian king. Volume 3, originally published in 1862, covers specific periods and events in Frederick the Great's life, including his involvement in the Silesian Wars and his reorganization of the Prussian army. The series details his military successes, territorial expansion, and influence on the arts and Enlightenment, solidifying Prussia's position as a major European power.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0857/9435/7545/files/history-of-friedrich-ii-of-prussia-called-frederick-the-great-vol-iii-324255.webp?v=1754416837
broken-shackles-old-man-henson-from-slavery-to-freedom
Broken Shackles: Old Man Henson From Slavery to Freedom

First published in Toronto in 1889 under the pseudonym Glenelg, Broken Shackles is a rare and powerful memoir of an African American man known as Old Man Henson.

In this compelling recollection, Henson shares his experiences as a slave in Maryland, his escape to refuge in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and his final freedom in Canada.
