Original Title: Sun Stand Thou Still In the days when Copernicus lived, everybody believed that the Earth was fixed at the centre of all things, and that the planets, including the Sun, all went around the Earth in circles. Copernicus, the founder of Modern Astronomy, claimed that it was the Sun that was fixed at the centre of all things and that Earth revolved around the Sun once a year. He guessed that the other planets also did a round around the Sun, each in a period of its own. Not until a century and a half after his death, in 1543, did scientists abandon the Earth-centered universe of the Ancients, and accept the Sun-centered universe which Copernicus had conceived.
