Description

In June 1950, the communist-backed forces of North Korea invaded the south, capturing most of the territory and raising the spectre of a third world war before the ashes of the second had cooled. The United Nations, only five years old, faced the first test of its ability to protect the sovereignty of member countries.

Canada answered the UN's call to help stop the invasion. Volunteers from across the country joined a war effort that harked back to the trenches of the First World War, even as it heralded the beginning of the modern era of unwindable, stalemated conflicts.
