A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson is a beautifully written companion novel to Life After Life, following Teddy Todd, the beloved younger brother of Ursula Todd. Teddy begins life as a would-be poet and later becomes an RAF bomber pilot, husband, father, and witness to the changing shape of the twentieth century.

After surviving the horrors of war, Teddy must face the quieter but equally difficult challenge of living a life he never expected to have. Atkinson explores his experiences in battle, his return to peacetime, his complicated family relationships, and the ways memory, age, and misunderstanding shape a person’s later years.

Thoughtful, moving, and richly layered, this novel is a strong choice for readers who enjoy literary fiction, World War II stories, family sagas, and character-driven novels about love, loss, survival, and the long shadows of history.
