Description

This 1880 ninth edition of the Ausbund was printed by the Mennonite Publishing House in Elkhart, Indiana. Written in older German and printed in the distinctive Fraktur typeface, this historic hymnal reflects the faith, worship, and cultural traditions of Anabaptist communities.

The Ausbund contains hymns centred on Christian faith, perseverance, persecution, sacrifice, and hope. Many of its songs have roots in the experiences of early Anabaptists who endured imprisonment and religious persecution. Its ornate Gothic-style lettering offers a striking example of nineteenth-century German-language printing in North America.

This antique edition is an appealing piece for collectors of Mennonite and Amish history, German religious books, hymnals, and early Indiana printing. Its age, language, typography, and religious significance make it an important addition to a collection of historical Christian literature or Anabaptist heritage materials
