This story begins in Toronto, on a winter night in 1861, when a group of Toronto men met in a gas-lit room to found a Regiment. Battle Royal is the story of that Regiment over the next one hundred years, and it is a fascinating account of a century of Canadian Military History. Major Goodspeed takes his readers through the thin woodland outside Fort Erie when Fenian stragglers are hiding in the underbrush. With the men of the Regiment we stumble across the snow-covered ice of Lake Superior and warm ourselves at tiny campfires on prairie trails. We cross the Saskatchewan River by scow and see the charge at Batoche.

The history of this Regiment reflects a large portion of the history of Canada and does much to explain why Canadians are known throughout the world as first-class fighting men.
