When first published, in 1726, "Travels into several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, first a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships" was hailed by critics as a masterpiece and became an instant best seller. The text, prepared by Herbert Davis, is based on the 1735 edition, which contained Swift's corrections to the original. Enhanced by Warren Chappell's splendid illustrations and commentary by the distinguished critic Jacques Barzun, the book remains as contemporary as ever. The humorous, which was too broad for some Victorian tastes, is hilarious today.
