Journey Through Owen Sound's Hockey History tells the story of hockey in Owen Sound from the banker's games of shinny in 1888 to the Owen Sound Attack players of the 21st century. Junior hockey stories begin in the early 1900s to create of the Owen Sound Greys in the pre World War One era. In the 1920s you will read about the future NHLers like Hockey Hall of Famer "Cooney" Weiand, "Butch" Keeling, Teddy Graham, and goalie Benny Grant who led the Owen Sound Greys to not one, but two Memorial Cup championships. These junior championships by the Greys etched Owen Sound in the history books as the smallest community to capture this prestigious award. You will learn about Owen Sound reputation as goalie factory producing local stars like Benny Grant, Hall of Fame star Harry Lumley, Gord "Red" Henry, Les Binkley, and Curtis Sanford. As well as, Kevin Weekes, Jamie Storr, Brent Johnson, and Jordan Binnington who all came to Owen Sound to hone their puckstopping skills. You will learn about the creation of the first artificial ice arena north of Kitchener in 1938 and the stars who came to celebrate this great event in Owen Sound's history.
In the 1940s and 50s you will read about the exploits of the Senior "A" Owen Sound Mercurys who, led by the Greatest North American never to play in the NHL, Tommy Burlington and former NHLer Pat McReavy led the team to the 1951 Allan Cup championship. A cast talented hockey players turned the Mercurys into a force to be reckoned with. Their roster included legendary Herb Carnegie who played his season of hockey in Owen Sound.
From the late 1950s to the end of book, Owen Sound junior clubs, the Greys, Platers and the Attack are the focus of attention. The untimely deaths of the Greys goalie and a teammate just hours before a playoff game reminds the reader of the fragility of life.
The last section of the book features short biographical sketches of Owen Sound junior players who climbed to the pinnacle of their hockey world, the NHL. These include Jim Shoenfeld, Jack Lynch, Doug Brindley, Sean Avery, Andrew Brunette, Lane MacDermid, Adam Mair, Kirk Maltby, Bobby Ryan, Dan Snyder, Nick Suzuki, and many more.
So, welcome aboard, and enjoy this book about a true Canadian hockey community.
