The Little King December by Axel Hacke

The Little King December by Axel Hacke is a whimsical illustrated fairy tale for adults, blending humour, philosophy, and imagination in a story reminiscent of The Little Prince.

The narrator begins receiving visits from December II, a tiny, pot-bellied king dressed in a red velvet coat. He comes from a world where life unfolds in reverse: people are born fully grown, begin work immediately, and become smaller with each passing day. As they shrink, they slowly forget the responsibilities of adulthood and return to simple pleasures—gummy bears, shadows in the garden, dreams, and wonder.

Through the little king’s upside-down view of life, Hacke explores memory, growing older, imagination, and the questions we often stop asking as adults. Michael Sowa’s distinctive illustrations add warmth and charm to this unusual modern fable.
