Originally published in 1939, Tobe by Stella Gentry Sharpe is a rare and historically significant children’s book that tells the story of a young African American boy growing up on a North Carolina farm. Featuring striking black-and-white photographs by Charles Farrell, the book was one of the first realistic portrayals of Black family life in children’s literature at the time. Commissioned by the Farm Security Administration, it offers an authentic glimpse into rural Southern life during the Depression era.
