This book is dedicated with gratitude to all Canadian Forces men and women, both past and present, who have voluntarily given of themselves to serve our country with pride and fortitude. By interviewing the military men and women who are featured in this book--and by speaking with many other military people as well--I have learned that at the core of every soldier is a sense of duty. Soldiers put society's needs ahead of their own to protect Canada's freedom and way of life. Since World War I, more than 100,000 Canadian soldiers have died before their natural time defending their steadfast beliefs. Our Canadian military heroes bear the darkness of war within them. They have borne witness to horrendous events that affect the very fibre of their being. With all my heart, I thank each of the military men and women who have generously shared their personal stories and perspectives on war.
